There are actually two types of homonyms-homophones and homographs. Homophones sound the same but are spelled differently (night-knight), homographs are spelled the same but pronounced differently (lead-lead), with different meanings of course.
I learned this on The Word Nerds podcast. This is one of my favorite podcasts. If only there was a companions show called The Grammar Nerds.
